While a roof plays an integral part in protecting your home, a well-maintained roof can extend the life of your house by avoiding water damage from leaks and exposure to direct sunlight. Know that the roof is subject to all kinds of weather conditions, so it is very important to keep it in good shape. However, like most homeowners, you may not think much about your roof as you probably should and eventually face major damages and repairs.

To provide you with knowledge about roofing and roof replacement, United Roofers Inc. has put together a Beginner’s Guide to roof replacement.

Getting Started

Get professional help: A professional roofing contractor has depth in both theory and practical application. Meaning they are well-trained and have proven their expertise through actual contracting services.

Next Steps

Have a roof inspection: So you can know about the condition of the roof. It will give you an idea of whether you need a new roof or if the existing roof simply needs to be repaired.

Get some estimates: if it is time to replace the roof, call a few professional companies and get an estimate to compare the best price and service.

Check for quality: When comparing prices, it’s recommended that you go for quality service and workmanship rather than the lowest prices. A roof is a huge investment, and you could end up spending thousands of dollars if you hire an inept professional.

Advice From The Pros

Always ask for references: These are a few questions you need to ask your potential roofing contractor,

a. How long has the contractor been in business?

b. Can the contractor provide you with a list of references?

c. Does the contractor use a written contract that includes the scope of the work and terms of payment?

d. Will the contractor provide you with the following documentation?

1. A valid manufacturer’s warranty

2. A copy of the contractor’s WSIB Certificate. (Make sure the contractor’s WSIB Certificate

is current. Visit wsib.ca/en/ to check the safety performance of your contractor. Keep in mind that clearances are valid for up to ninety days from the date of issue.)

3. A copy of the contractor’s work-related insurance certificate to ensure that risks are covered. (Insurance should include a preset amount of liability coverage.)

Once you have this information, it will become easier to find a reliable professional. That said, if roofing contractors do not provide you with the information you’ve asked for, they may not have WSIB coverage or insurance of any kind. You could be personally liable if an accident or an injury occurs. This can include being held responsible for medical and other costs. You could also be exposed to lawsuits.

Do not rely on verbal promises: Protect yourself and your assets by ensuring the contractor gives you a written contract. This written agreement should include specific work to be performed, the terms of payment, and warranties or guarantees. Without a contract, you are not protected.

Avoid working with cheap roof contractors: Don’t just go for a low price! Keep in mind that a roof is a major investment, so make sure you hire a competent company for the job.
